According to Michael M. Patterson, somatic dysfunction has been a central concept within osteopathy since the beginning of osteopathy. Later osteopaths further developed Still's approach to the lesion concept, for which the term "osteopathic lesion" was coined, which ultimately led to the term "somatic dysfunction".
This article differentiates and discusses the definitions and terminology of osteopathic lesion concepts that refer back to Still and early osteopaths. The term "osteopathic lesion" developed on the basis of Still's understanding of lesions in the sense of an obstruction of vital fluids or their neuronal control centres. The original term "lesion" was mostly used to refer to disorders of the spinal structures.

The osteopathic treatment of enuresis nocturna requires knowledge of the specific anatomical-physiological dynamics of bladder function. Diagnostic expertise is closely linked to an understanding of pathophysiological processes. However, specific osteopathic diagnosis is distinct from this and is based on other approaches and diagnostic methods.
Possible patterns of dysfunction can manifest themselves with symptoms of hoarseness, voice disorders, ventral sore throat and globus sensation (functional dysphonia). The neuromuscular component usually takes centre stage in laryngeal disorders.
